“Open Campus”

In Japan, “Open Campus” is an Anglicism commonly used to refer to Open House and it is one of the major events in the academic year of Japanese universities. This is a unique opportunity for the public to access all facilities and laboratories to take a look into various research, gather information and discover the university in more depth. It is most important for high school students when they are considering which universities they will attend to after graduation.
The 2014 School of Engineering “Open Campus” took place on July 30 and 31 and attracted around 7000 visitors, mainly high school students, who toured the Aobayama campus, visited the buildings and laboratories, listened to presentations and spoke with staff, faculty and enrolled students as they learned about the possibilities that the School of Engineering has to offer. Actually, the prime reason for the event is for the School of Engineering to attract prospective students from all over Japan, as well as to let the presently enrolled undergraduates gather information about all research laboratories before they select one which they will join to study their majors. At the same time, the laboratories are making good use of the “Open Campus” to promote their research and attract the best students.
