Tohoku University (TU) Alumni Aboard

TU Chinese Alumui Association

The Tohoku University (TU) Chinese Alumni Association, which was established in 2006, will celebrate its 8th anniversary at the end of this year. Having more than 500 members over China, it is proud of being the largest foreign university alumni association in China, as well as the largest TU overseas alumni community in the world. There are more than 60 members who graduated from or have roots in the School of Engineering. The “big members” and advisers of the association are the former President of Tsinghua University, Prof. Binlin Gu, and the current President of Peking University, Prof. Enge Wang, both of whom worked at IMR (Institute for Materials Research), TU in the 1990s. The current chair of the association is Prof. Qikun Xue, a famous physicist in the Department of Physics and Vice President of Tsinghua University, as well as a professor of AIMR (Advanced Institute for Materials Research) of TU. Many alumni have achieved great success in the academic fields as well as in many other fields, building on their experience at Tohoku University, and continuing in the spirit of Tohoku University. The association functions to unite alumni by providing various opportunities for close communication. The biggest event of each year is the General Meeting of the association where many alumni gather together to share old memories of Sendai and their new experiences in China. It has also become a great pleasure for Tohoku University leadership to join this meeting once a year to share the warm atmosphere of a big family. The association also acts as an important bridge between China and Japan, contributing to the alma mater of its members in various ways, such as giving valuable suggestions toward globalization activities of TU through a yearly “Opinion Exchange Meeting”; helping TU, especially the SoE, to establish a students recruiting system based at Tsinghua University; providing support in the “Study in Japan” Fairs held in Chinese cities by Japanese organizations.
On the TU campus, a younger generation of Chinese TU students has also its TU Chinese Association in Sendai with more than 800 members nowadays. Following in footsteps of their great seniors, they are working hard toward realizing their dreams through new challenges.
