Starting during their youth and continuing all through their education, Japanese have a long tradition of participating in sports day. This is an annual event organized within a school during which the pupils take part to competitive sport activities. Sports day is part of the educational system until high school graduation, however, the school of Engineering of the Tohoku University is one of the few universities to continue this tradition at a tertiary level.
This year, the event took place on May 23 and participated in by all departments of the School of Engineering. All students joined the event, either to compete or support their teams. Even the professors were invited to compete! Among other sports, the relay and the centipede race (in single file with all right and left legs tighten together) entertained the crowd. However, the main event as usual was the tug of war. The final stage of this competition took place in an enthusiastic atmosphere of a fierce battle between the Department of Nanomechanics and the Department of Materials Science, the Department of Nanomechanics finally won. But this victory was not enough for it to claim the championship, which went to the Department of Applied Chemistry, who became the king of the mountain!
