Since its establishment in 1907, “Research First” has been one of the three fundamental principles of Tohoku University. This has enabled it to maintain a high level of research for over 100 years. Engineering is the one of the most active research fields at Tohoku University and the School of Engineering has established a reputation as vibrant center of high-quality research and development at various world leading new frontiers. We are proud of many celebrated world-class researchers in both academic and practical fields, including one Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2002 and several famous inventors whose work, which propelled IT technology to a new age, still influences present day-life style, such as, the invention of optical communication system, flashing memory. Now, facing various difficult global technology issues, we are continuing our challenge to try standing at new frontiers for the innovation of engineering.
